Our mission is to improve the lives of our residents living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias.
We do that by offering flexible activities focusing on people’s strengths, abilities and interests. Our memory care residents enjoy a fulfilling life in the safety of a secure unit that includes access to the outdoors, where they can enjoy a private garden.
Cognitive loss does not mean loss of quality of life. We believe that educating staff, family members, and loved ones will help them understand the world from the perspective of a memory-deficit resident. Much can be relearned from sharing the world of those with cognitive disabilities.
The ‘golden colonies’ approach to memory care
Individuals with dementia still want to feel valued and involved in the world around them. Our memory care program is based on the idea of honeybee colonies and how they function as a family. Individuals within a colony work together for the benefit of the hive. As with each member of the honeybee society, each resident – as well as each member of our interdisciplinary care team – has an important role to play.
The golden colonies approach follows the Montessori principles of “relating, motivating and appreciating,” enabling our “hive” to support a happy and healthy life for its residents. Each resident is given opportunities each day, including whether to participate in activities and other opportunities. Through a partnership of caring and education, we strive to maintain a “colony” that nurtures quality of life while promoting safety and independence in a social culture.
